⚜️ Florence ⚜️
Florence (Latin Florentia) is the largest city near Castello del Trebbio and the capital of the Tuscany region.
🚗 Distance from the castle: approximately 20–30 minutes by car, depending on where in the city you’re heading.
A little history 📜
● Founded as a military settlement during the Roman Empire in 58 BC
● Became an independent city-state from 1030
● Served as the capital of the Kingdom of Italy from 1865 to 1870
● Pope Boniface VIII famously described Florence as “the fifth element of the world”
During the Middle Ages, Florence grew into one of Europe’s most important trading cities — importing everything from whalebone from Iceland and Greenland to luxury goods from far-off lands. In many ways, Florence played a crucial role in the development of early capitalism.
Birthplace of the Renaissance 🎨
Florence is widely regarded as the heart of the Renaissance and humanism. This is where the ideals of classical antiquity were rediscovered, refined, and reimagined — and where some of history’s greatest artists and thinkers were nurtured, including Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Sandro Botticelli (Camilla’s personal favourite). Many of their most celebrated works can still be experienced in the city today.
